On the Hunt: Quick! Duck!

As I approach the darkness and quiet at the edge of the woods

Glimpsing into the forbidding chasm that feels will engulf me

I ease up to it, and gently move in

the wind softly brushing tree tops, a sense that feels eerie

One step further, the crunch of snow under my boots

Almost reaching their tops, and a bit uncertain

The shadows cast, from a bright winters moon

Drapes over me, like a velvety curtain

I carry my armor, with my buddy, as we go side by side

Looking for that special spot, that will give us something new

His nose vacuuming the terrain, my eyes focused ahead

Searching for the right spot, to bring all into view

And then with the hike, comes the pond we were in search of

Where we’ll hunker down, and wait for first light

Awaiting that moment, closely sitting together

At that split second, our along awaited plan, comes into sight

Pop, pop bang, bang, bang as barrels pointed upwards,

with my pals tail alive and waggin

But no plop, plop into the water has been heard, a little off the target,

and nothing we’ll be baggin

And so goes that day, one of many missed opportunities,

as they all got away

Just hangin with my buddy, made all the missing,

still seem to feel ok

So my feathered friends we bid you, a happy goodby,

and perhaps at another time

That we might come together, where the stars will all align

So fly gracefully into other parts unknown,

with thanks from me and my pal,

as we happily return home
