The slide into winter, as the days grow shorter,
and the lengthening of the nights.
The temperatures dropping downward, and much grayer in sight
Preparations being made, with gifts being wrapped and given bows
With sugar plum fairies dancing, but still a bit to go
Awaiting the appearance, of the man dressed in red,
and hopes of more snow
The sound of sleigh bells, and a hardy
Ho Ho Ho
The awakening patter, and the rustling about
A child’s tee-hee, to see what could be found
A look to the table, to see if cookies and milk were gone
Surely enough, just crumbs on a plate and an empty glass,
we’re all that was found
The smiles from adults, the laughter and the joy
The paper crinkling, the oohs and ash’s, of a new toy
Then the many days of shopping, and wrapping gifts galore
The piles of paper around the tree, while sitting on the floor
Then on to a cup of hot cocoa, and a cookie or two
A time to play with new gifts received, while sharing a few
Then onto the next holiday, soon to arrive
Goodbye to the past, hello to the new year, with eyes open wide
A time to begin again, so it is said, and resolutions to better oneself
Put all decorations away, up on a shelf
